Ahoy Mateys!

Our flatmate Liz sails competitively, so she invited along yesterday. We sailed in our first race in Sydney Harbour on a 32-foot boat (for some reason boats are the one thing they don't measure metrically). Mainly we moved from one side of the boat to the other to keep it properly weighted or handed the people that knew what they were doing the things they needed. Apparently it is not that difficult to show up at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia on a Wednesday evening, put your name on the marker board, and pick up on a boat that needs crew (or eye candy if you're a lady), even if you have little experience on boats.

This is the only picture I took of Michael before we started because I didn't want my phone to fall in the water during the race.

The race lasted a little over an hour and we came in 8th out of about 15 teams. We met a lot of nice people and had drinks afterwards at the yacht club. Talk about experiencing how the other half live.
